RESJ FACES In-Home Tutoring (Pre-K – 5th Grade)

In person at the homes of families from selected Portland Public Elementary Schools.

Must have availability during evenings and after-school hours. Volunteers must commit to working a minimum of 1-2 hours per week for at least 8 weeks (about 2 months).

Position Description:

RESJ FACES programming provides racial equity and social justice-centered, community minded, culturally dynamic, multilingual/multicultural support to African, Asian, Pacific Islander and Slavic Immigrant and Refugee families, caregivers, and students.

Position Summary:

The RESJ FACES program seeks dedicated, responsible, and culturally mindful volunteers to support Pre-K through 5th grade Immigrant and Refugee students with academic and culturally specific activities at selected schools in the Portland Public School District. An interview, orientation and background check are required.

• Have a passion for helping students achieve their goals.
• Commitment to working with diverse populations and non-native English speakers.
• Fluency in any of the following languages is helpful, but not a requirement: Vietnamese, Somali, Maay-Maay, Tongan or Russian language.
• Provide academic support to Pre K-5th grade students in math and literacy.
• Interest in participating in "in-home tutoring" and or "group activities" that support family connection, cultural identity, wellness and wellbeing and cultural sharing within the larger school community.
• Ability to build good relationships with students and parents to pursue the students' academic goals.

Requirements:

• Must be 18 or older
• Must pass background check
• Driver's license needed

Time Commitment:

Volunteers must commit to working a minimum of 1-2 hours per week for at least 8 weeks (about 2 months)
