Cheryl Coon is the Executive Director and founder of Refugee Disability Benefits Oregon, a nonprofit established to meet the needs of disabled refugees in Oregon. She graduated magna cum laude from Bryn Mawr College in 1974; cum laude from Boston University School of Law in 1977; and the University of Washington School of Law with a LL.M in 1981. During her 39 years practicing law, she has litigated in state and federal courts and administrative tribunals; spent 6 years working on public policy issues in the U.S. Congress as staff director of a congressional committee; and practiced law for a decade as a senior assistant attorney general in the Oregon Attorney General’s office. Most recently Cheryl was in private law practice at Swanson Thomas Coon & Newton where she led the social security disability team. She previously chaired the Disability Law Section of the Oregon Bar, is the immediate past chair of the Environmental Law Alliance Worldwide, and is a past Board member of the Brain Injury Alliance of Oregon and the Children's Diabetes Network. Cheryl enjoys educational presentations, writing and, most of all, representing individuals while advocating for systemic policy change.
