SUN Schools – Chess Teacher and Coach

Lincoln Park Elementary - 13200 SE Lincoln St, Portland, OR 97233

Either Mondays and Tuesdays OR Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:15pm - 5:30pm. January 16th through March 14th

Position Description:

SUN Community Schools are full-service neighborhood hubs where the school and partners from across the community come together to make sure kids and families have what they need to be successful – in school and in life. SUN Community schools mobilize and strategically organize community resources to provide instructional support, skill development, recreational activities, family support and access to social, and health and mental health resources.

Position Summary:

Do you enjoy spending time with kids, value supporting after-school programs and love chess? We are looking to have someone come teach our youth about chess in an after-school program. With a diverse community, we are looking for someone who can connect with our youth in an impactful way beyond just being an activity leader. This is an opportunity to also be a mentor to the youth. Volunteers will support staff with:
• After-school meals and recess at the beginning of SUN
• Leading Chess Club for an hour and 30 minutes
• Dismissal of students at the end of the day

• Experience working with diverse youth
• Experience and knowledge of chess
• Some college would be nice, but is not required
• Understanding of social justice

Requirements:

• Must be 18 or older
• Must pass David Douglas School District background check
• Must attend a SUN Orientation with other staff members and partners
